Are there any benefits in choosing OLE DB interface instead of using the native DB-Library connectivity?
What is recommended?

Well, basically everything that was added to SQL Server after
version 6.5 is not supported by DB-Library.
DB-Library became obsolete years ago. Don't even think about using
it.
Linda|||I would not recommend using DB-Library. Yukon, the next release of SQL
Server, will not include the files needed to develop DB-Library
applications. The following warning has been in the readme of every SQL
Server 2000 service pack and in every update to the SQL Server 2000 Books
Online:
Warning While the DB-Library API is still supported in Microsoft SQL Server
2000, no future versions of SQL Server will include the files needed to do
programming work on applications that use this API. Connections from
existing applications written using DB-Library will still be supported in
the next version of SQL Server, but this support will also be dropped in a
future release. When writing new applications, avoid using DB-Library. When
modifying existing applications, you are strongly encouraged to remove
dependencies on DB-Library. Instead of DB-Library, you can use Microsoft
ActiveX® Data Objects (ADO), OLE DB, or ODBC to access data in SQL Server.
Also, this topic in the SQL Server 2000 Books Online outlines the types of
features not available to DB-Library applications:
http://msdn.microsoft.com/library/?url=/library/en-us/bldgapps/ba_highprog_56pc.asp?frame=true
And a third point against DB-Library: the SQL Server client components used
in ADO.NET, ADO, OLE DB, and ODBC are also native interfaces for SQL Server.
The SQLClient managed provider, the SQLOLEDB provider, and SQL Server ODBC
driver all use the native SQL Server protocol (TDS) to send their requests
to the database engine. DB-Library will not have an inherent performance
advantage over any of these APIs.

Quite a bit.
I have a list on
http://www.sommarskog.se/mssqlperl/mssql-sqllib.html#restrictions_with_new_datatypes
This text is in the context of two Perl modules that I have.
DB-Library is a very nice interface, fast and simple that does not
do things behind your back. Unfortunately, Microsoft does not at all
share my opinion on this matter.

DB-library network communications layer not loaded
Hi guys. I'm a pleb in a POS company and I'm learning SQL server on the fly. I'm sure that'll sound familiar.
I've got one client's having problems with our system. We have a program that runs at night that performs database maintenance tasks. This program has worked in all our other clients sites except this one.
At first I thought it might be a missing "sa" user due to the following error:
RUNTIME ERROR "-2147203048 (80044818): [Microsoft][ODBC SQL
Server driver][SQL Server]Login failed for user 'sa'
I've spoken to the programmers and they have no idea as to why:
1. The user isn't there
2. A quick way of fixing.
The best suggestion that they've come up with is to install Enterprise manager. Something is better then nothing I guess.
Anyway, in the mean time, I've contacted a former associate of the company and asked him to ask error. He then came back with some helpful stuff, one of which jogged my memory to just run a quick test of the 'sa' user to see if it's there. So I run just a simple command line query (isql -U sa, no password) which returned the following error:
DB-Library: Db-library network communications layer not loaded.
This leads me to believe that 'sa' is in fact there. The thing that further compounds this belief is that the main POS can logon through that driver except this particular database maintenance application.
I'd appreciate any help you've got. Please bear with me if this is posted on the wrong forum. Thanks.
Kind regards,
ka Kwok
Customer Service OperatorRE:

Hopefully the issue is simply that the sa account HAS a password other than nothing (if not it would be wise to consider immediately issuing the sa account a strong password).
Q1 I'd appreciate any help you've got. Please bear with me if this is posted on the wrong forum. Thanks. Kind regards, ka Kwok Customer Service Operator
A1 Some things to consider and / or check may include:
Create and try another TestConnection account with a known (strong) password. What type of connections does the server support, and has it been verified that the Sql Service is in fact always running? Is Sql Server security configured for the connection type being attempted (standard Sql Server login, in the case of sa)? Is it possible to connect using Query Analyzer and a TestConnection account locally (if not, verify that the correct protocol, ports, etc., is being accessed)? Check and / or update MDAC levels as necessary / appropriate.
{More detailed information (including the Sql Server, MDAC, etc. versions involved, etc.), should make it easier for others to provide more useful / helpful feedback.}|||Thanks for your response. I've been thinking about this issue a fair bit.
I want to provide more information but given my position, I'm having problem trying to source that information. Currently, I'm not even been given a lot of help or support from any one with in the company to resolve this situation. However I'm pretty adamant on fixing this problem since it's an important client (if anything politcal happens I'll just treat it as the trigger).
Anyway, I'm starting to think that it might be a corrupted MDAC library. The server that's running our POS is serviced by another company and I'm starting to suspect something happened that no one's telling me stuff about.
I'm going to try a lot of what suggested with the other posts (on related matter) and see if that helps.
I'm still pretty much learning MS SQL on the fly.
I've bought a book on it but I'd value some better sources. Would you happen to have some sort good links or a list of good references.
I appreciated your help.
Thanks again.
Kind regards,

Ka Kwok|||Hi, you guys have been extremely helpful. Anyway, I kinda nutted out the problem. Some shmoll has renamed the sa password. I came across the following MSKBA(#322336):
1. Goto the BINN dir
2. osql -U sa <enter><enter> ::This test the password
3. If you get a password file then at least you know the user's there.
To change the password:
1. Goto the BINN dir
2. osql -E <enter> ::Logs you in using Windows authentication
3. sp_password @.old = null, @.new = <password>, @.loginame = 'sa' <enter> ::Where <password> is the new 'password ' (in single quotes) or null for no password
4. go <enter>
My application needed no password (weak security I know, but it ain't my code), and that got them going (touch wood).
Thanks again.

DB-Library error 10038
Hi There,
We have VC++6.0 based application which uses DB-Library calls to communicate with the SQL Server2000 database.
There is typical scenario in the application where we want to process the result of a multiple-row based query in WHILE loop and execute another query inside WHILE loop based on the data in the result fetched.
The psuedo-code is as below
While (result.fetch())
{
//prepare where clause based on the data in the row fetched
char* strWhere= ...
//Execute the Query on the same connection using db-lib API
//Fetch the result
}
But DB-Library do not allow such scenario and throws below error
"DB-Library error 10038: Attempt to initiate a new SQL Server operation with results pending."
Because of the tightly coupled business logic, its impossible to change the WHILE LOOP and also the flow of the application.
Is there any solution for above said problem?
Thanks in advance.
Regards,
Yog
Hi. You have the wrong newsgroup, but one thing that would fix it
is to make the inner query with a different connection than the
outer query. An alternative would be to switch away from DbLib, so you
could do fetches in a cursor-based approach.

Yog,
You will need to either fetch all the values first, close the result set,
and then do your inner loop query logic or use two separate connections to
the same database. Just like the error message says, the problem is that you
have initiated an operation that still has data to be retrieved from the
server and then attempted to execute another query.

This is a problem which typically arises when the results from an ongoing
command are still being processed.
In your scenario, you have probably sent a command to the server before all
results from a previous command have been processed.
To overcome this problem, the only way is to wait for the results to
process from the first query and then start the new query in the same
session.

1. Create another connection and execute your "subquery" in that connection
2. Wait for Yukon release - it is announced that Yukon will support

There is typical scenario in the application where we want to process the result of a multiple-row based query in WHILE loop and execute another query inside WHILE loop based on the data in the result fetched.

DB-Library and sp_dbcmptlevel in Sql Server 2005
Hello!
We are currently running SQL Server 7.0 with databases in 6.5-compatibility
mode for DB-Library.
- Will this still be supported in Sql Server 2005?
- If so, any changes in behaviour?
- What new features will we be "missing out of" by continuing with the above
setup (db-lib + 6.5-mode) also in Sql Server 2005?
- Any future plans of dropping the support for DB-Lib with Sql Server?
ThanxAFAIK, the dblib interface will be supported in the next version of sql
server. MS has indicated that they do intend to stop supporting it but they
have not announced when. MS has indicated that the dblib api is
feature-frozen and will not be enhanced to take advantage of any new
features introduced after sql server version 6.5.
The most important feature that dblib does not support is char columns > 255
characters. Beyond that, I don't know of any particular features that
cannot be accessed. It is NOT necessary to set the database into 6.5
compatibility mode when using the dblib interface; you may want to review
the process that lead you to this decision. BOL has a section that
discusses the changes between the most current versions of sql server - that
is what you are missing out of by setting the compatibility mode.
