Deadlock Issues When performing reports on subscriber

We have transactional replication being performed from our TX Database Server
to our Reporting Database Server. All of our reports are run off of our
Reporting Database Server. We have no queries that are performing Update or
Exclusive locks except for the sp_MS stored procedures being used for the
Transactional replication.
I'm trying to identify the root cause of the issue. We don't want to apply
the trace flags to our production servers for capturing the deadlock
information. We have the profiler gathering all the report requests and we
were even lucky enough to capture a deadlock victim error, but we don't have
the process that was allowed to continue. We also have a job set up to
report spids that are marked as blocked, but we didn't have this set up in
time to catch our last deadlock. We experience most our deadlocks on days
that we have high transaction volume (Fridays) and also days that reports are
more frequently requested (Mondays).
Potential Issue #1:
Our reporting server is a Dell PowerEdge 1750, 2 Processors, and only 2GB
RAM. We are looking at upgrading this to a HP 4 Proc dual core with 16GB RAM
which I'm sure will help out but I don't want to just mask what the real
issue is. I'm thinking potentially there could be lock escalation occurring
during high TX volume days by the replication sp_MSIns* procedures due to the
fact that we only have 2GB RAM. Does this sound likely?
Potential Issue #2:
After analyzing one of the reports I have noticed that the query is
accessing a view that has a union all. We cannot index this view due to the
union all, so a table scan is being performed on close to 4 Million rows. My
idea is to break this into two different views and then index each view by
order date to shorten the duration of the Shared Lock. Could the length of
time the Shared Lock being held be the main reason for our deadlock issues
especially on high volume TX days? I'm also considering either setting the
reports Isolation level to Read Uncommitted or use the ReadPast hint to avoid
the Shared Lock all together.
Any other suggestions?
I would have a look at replicating the execution of stored procedures and
using the nolock hints.
run sp_replcounters to get an idea of how many commands per transaction you
have. If its a one to one, replicating the execution of stored procedures
won't help you much, but if its out by several orders of magnitude you will
get a huge improvement in performance and considerably reduced locking.

|||One thing to try is to use WITH (NOLOCK) option on your table selects.
Since you are not updating the data on the subscriber it may help. I
have banged my head against these union views in the past and its
always a killer. Also checking to make sure the underlaying tables
have indexes is another thing...
Hope it helps..
Aravin.
|||Union all is also faster than a union, but it may return duplicates.
Evaluate your union to discover if the potential for duplicates exist and
whether this is problematic for you.

|||Larry - I'd personally identify the cause of the deadlock before proceeding.
If you are using profiler then I'd turn it off and just set up the trace
flags. Are you using SQL 2005? If so you can use trace flag 1222 which is
lightweight and provides more easily digestible info than before.

Deadlock bug in MoveItem or CreateReport

Reporting services is throwing deadlock exceptions which if retried (up to 10 times) sometimes succeed. When those exceptions happen Reporting Services is coming to a halt waiting for the deadlock to resolve. Performance is unacceptably degraded then.
In my test I am trying to run multiple concurrent SOAP sessions with a single admin level user account and in each session my process moves old report definitions into historical folders (saves with unique names) and then creates new report definition (again the report names are not overlapping) and finally creates a snapshot of the new report.
1. Is there a way to avoid those deadlocks?
2. From the SQL Server log files it looks like there is some level of pessimistic locking happening on some tables. Is that really necessary? It seems like the operations that are being performed deal with independent data elements that should not require any synchronization/serialization.
3. What level of parallelism is allowed when making concurrent calls to the server on the same user id but within separate sessions? Are there any restrictions?
4. Is there a place (maybe at MSDN) to report this as a real bug?
I can also provide sql server trace log file with information about the deadlock. No way to attach it here.

DCOM error

I just installed sql server 2005 on a windows 2003 server. I chose the option to install but do not configure. After restarting, I used the Reporting SErvices Configuration Manager and it all looks ok. When I browse to //localhost/reports I get a rs page with the message of:

The request failed with HTTP status 400: Bad Request.

One slightly unusual thing is SQL Server 2005 was installed as a named instance ("(local)\SQL2K5") - the server's default instance is a sql 2000 installation, which had RS installed and running. Before configuring RS for 2k5, I deleted the VDs for Reports and ReportServer from IIS, so that I could recreate them to use 2K5.

The new ReportServer VD appears to work (although no reports are installed to test).

Thanks for any help getting this issue resolved!

I have a bunch of these in Application Log... I have a feeling it's related.. I don't know what it means though
The application-specific permission settings do not grant Local Activation permission for the COM Server application with CLSID
{BA126AD1-2166-11D1-B1D0-00805FC1270E}
to the user NT AUTHORITY\NETWORK SERVICE SID (S-1-5-20). This security permission can be modified using the Component Services administrative tool.

Anyone?

|||

I'm not sure the applog error that you're catching is related, so let's try to fix it and then see if the original problem goes away (I suspect it won't):

1. Click Start | Run and run dcomcnfg.exe

2. In MMC, open Component Services | My Computer

3. Right-click My Computer, choose Properties, select the COM Security tab. Click on the edit default button in Launch permissions options area

4. Add network service and give it appropriate perms (Local Launch and Local Activation permissions)

If that doesn't do the trick:

1. Start DCOMCNFG

2. Under Component Services -> My Computer -> Dcom Config -> Netman click
Properties, then Security tab

3. In Launch and Activation Permissions box click Edit.

4. Add Network Service with Local Launch and Local Activation permissions

Good luck!|||Nope... you were right - neither worked.

I have since created 2 new VDs - Reports2K5 and ReportServer2k5, which correspond to my instance of SQL SErver 2005. The REportServer2K5 appears to be working OK... Reports2K5 (manager) still gives me the 400 error.
Would this error be logged anywhere?

Thanks for your help.|||Big Smile The site (Default web site) was using a specific IP address.. I changed it to All Unassigned and it works!

|||Good catch!|||Is there a way to configure SQL 2005 Reporting Services using an IIS Website with a specific IP?|||

I'm getting the same event error:

to the user NT AUTHORITY\NETWORK SERVICE SID (S-1-5-20). This security permission can be modified using the Component Services administrative tool.

I went into Component Services and Netman has local launch permissions and can find no reference for "Network Connection Manager Class" (the name the ID translates to based upon registry lookup). What in Component Services should I be looking for and where? This is a brand new installation of 2003 Server Professional w/ Exchange 2003 and all the latest service packs/patches. Thanks,

John

Had very similar on 4 servers, all using unassigned , but they all had host headers specified. Short summary below to explain.

Each server had three web sites all bound to unassigned ip address, using host headers and diffrent ssl ports to separate ou the traffic.

Report server had previously been working ok until the final site config when the host headers were implemented.

As one site could act as a default then the problem was resolved by adding an additional binding for port 80 with no header specified.

All boxes running fine now.

The origonal posting pointed me in the right direction and as I was also implmenting http endpoints in SQL , I could have spent awhile on red herings. Much thanks.

had a similar problem and found out the following:

If you want to run Reporting Services under a different port than normal, you have to change these two config files:
rsreportserver.config
and
RSWebApplication.config

Enter the full path (like http://servername:port/ReportServer) to <ReportServerUrl> (delete <ReportServerVirtualDirectory> then!) or resp. <UrlRoot>

The result is then
<Configuration>
<UI>
<ReportServerUrl>http://mbs05:8088/reportserver</ReportServerUrl>
<ReportServerVirtualDirectory></ReportServerVirtualDirectory>
<ReportBuilderTrustLevel>FullTrust</ReportBuilderTrustLevel>

and

<Configuration>

|||Just a blank host header for a site that has an assigned IP. Work on three different boxes for me.|||Same for me. I moved Reporting Services to it's own website (because sharepoint installed it's own ISAPI filter on the default website that was totally screwing up RS), and set a host header for the new site. Every time I turned off the default website, RS would break, even though it should have nothing to do with it.
I switched the host headers around (so the default website has host headers, and the RS website doesn't) now it works perfectly.

Folks,

I'm trying to resolve the same error but having a bit of trouble following through the instructions in the KB.

If one of you could please set me right it would be much appreciated.

Firstly, the error I'm getting in the event log is as follows:

"The application-specific permission settings do not grant Local Activation permission for the COM Server application with CLSID

{BA126AD1-2166-11D1-B1D0-00805FC1270E}

to the user NT AUTHORITY\NETWORK SERVICE SID (S-1-5-20). This security permission can be modified using the Component Services administrative tool."

So I go to the regedit and look it up.
I search for BA126AD1-2166-11D1-B1D0-00805FC1270E
And Regedit duly comes up with:

HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\CLSID\{BA126AD1-2166-11D1-B1D0-00805FC1270E}

Which identifies this as the "Network Connection Manager Class"

Allright..now the KB article then tells me to :

4. Click Start, click Run, type dcomcnfg in the Open box, and then click OK.

If a Windows Security Alert message prompts you to keep blocking the Microsoft Management Console program, click to unblock the program. 5. In Component Services, double-click Component Services, double-click Computers, double-click My Computer, and then click DCOM Config. 6. In the details pane, locate the program by using the friendly name.

If the AppGUID identifier is listed instead of the friendly name, locate the program by using this identifier.

And this is where I'm stuck.. cos there is nothing there that corresponds to a Network Connection Manager Class or to the CLSID... (is that what they mean in the doc when they refere to AppGUID ?)

So, I can't continue on with the fix.. because I can't find the right app to fix the launch and activation permissions for....

I'd really appreciate a bit of help on this one...

Thanks

Which identifies this as the "Network Connection Manager Class"

Allright..now the KB article then tells me to :

And this is where I'm stuck.. cos there is nothing there that corresponds to a Network Connection Manager Class or to the CLSID... (is that what they mean in the doc when they refere to AppGUID ?)

So, I can't continue on with the fix.. because I can't find the right app to fix the launch and activation permissions for....

I'd really appreciate a bit of help on this one...

Another question on this...just to be sure I'm chasing the right tail....

When I point a browser at the site http://localhost/Reportserver$DeptServer05 I get the following message...

An internal error occurred on the report server. See the error log for more details. (rsInternalError) Get Online Help

Good luck!

|||Nope... you were right - neither worked.

I have since created 2 new VDs - Reports2K5 and ReportServer2k5, which correspond to my instance of SQL SErver 2005. The REportServer2K5 appears to be working OK... Reports2K5 (manager) still gives me the 400 error.
Would this error be logged anywhere?

Had very similar on 4 servers, all using unassigned , but they all had host headers specified. Short summary below to explain.

Each server had three web sites all bound to unassigned ip address, using host headers and diffrent ssl ports to separate ou the traffic.

Report server had previously been working ok until the final site config when the host headers were implemented.

As one site could act as a default then the problem was resolved by adding an additional binding for port 80 with no header specified.

I switched the host headers around (so the default website has host headers, and the RS website doesn't) now it works perfectly.|||

{BA126AD1-2166-11D1-B1D0-00805FC1270E}

to the user NT AUTHORITY\NETWORK SERVICE SID (S-1-5-20). This security permission can be modified using the Component Services administrative tool."

So I go to the regedit and look it up.
I search for BA126AD1-2166-11D1-B1D0-00805FC1270E
And Regedit duly comes up with:

HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\CLSID\{BA126AD1-2166-11D1-B1D0-00805FC1270E}

Thanks

PJ

Another question on this...just to be sure I'm chasing the right tail....

When I point a browser at the site http://localhost/Reportserver$DeptServer05 I get the following message...

An internal error occurred on the report server. See the error log for more details. (rsInternalError) Get Online Help

dbo.f_myfunction only works for me and not other users using RS

I wrote a udf in sql server for my dataset for a report in Reporting
Services. I publish the report to the Report Server, and I can invoke the
report, but other users get an error message that they don't have the
permissions to run this udf. How do I establish permissions so that everyone
who is authorized to use RS reports on/from our intranet can run this udf?
Where do I set the permissions? Do I do this at the Sql Server end?
Thanks,
RichThis is set at SQL Server. If SQL 2005, right mouse click on the function,
properties, permission. You could give public permission to it. I have a
role specifically for RS users that I use for assigning rights to my stored
procedures and to my functions.

ask, do I want to set a role for this udf or do I want to go to the server
security and assign permissions there?
Thanks,
Rich

execute set to public. Hope that does it.

dbnull

Is there an easy way in Reporting service to handle dbull in dataset?

I am using the local mode of the new reportviewer control, when I feed the dataset to the report, if there are some dbull column, an exception will be thrown.

To those string column, I can set NULLVALUE property to empty, but to other datatype, like integer, datetime, money, what should I do?

ThanksDBNull is translated to a unitialized object in the report. You can use IsNothing, i.e. IsNothing(Fields!Foo.Value).|||Hey, you know what, it is very strange.

If I use BindingDatasource.datasource = ds.tables(0), (BindDatasource is bound to ReportViewer), I will have exception if any field is null.

But if I use
BindingDatasource.datasource = ds
BindingDatasource.datamember = "Table1"

I don't get exception any more.

Don't why, but it works like charm.

Wei|||

If this solves your problem, please mark the question answered. Thanks. :)

|||In addition to =IsNothing(Fields!Foo.Value), you could use the IS keyword: (Fields!Foo.Value is Nothing)
